    Question on pickup payload capacity

I have an 01 RAM 2500 4x4 full cab. A 2500 is three quarter ton payload I thought (1,500 pounds). When I check the vehicle specs, it says around 3,000 pounds.

Can somebody explain the difference? I see similar differences for Fords and Chevys.

That was how they named them back in the day. With suspension upgrades since way back then they can haul more. The name just stuck instead of changing it to a six quarter ton haha.

You won't want to go far with 3000# in the back of a 2500 Dodge

I agree, but the engineers designing it had something in mind. The 1500 payload is 1,500 pounds. Subtract 500 pounds for occupants in the cab, and it's 1,000 pounds or 1/2 ton.

I agree with you. I'm not one to pay much attention to these ratings but rather go by the handling of the truck with a load. Sometimes that is more and sometimes less than the charts.

I know my 2500 Dodge shop truck doesn't like more that 2000-2500 lbs. loaded in the bed.

Iv had 9 tons on top of a 25 foot gooseneck behind a 2500 and it was barely on the overloads. Also had 14 tons on the same gooseneck behind a 3500. I'm sure the 2500 had over 3000# of tongue weight. It pulled it fine and didn't even heat up the transmission. The 3500 was dot apportion plated to carry 29,000 behind the truck including trailer

Good point about over loads, not all 2500's have them but yours does that's a game changer

I have carried a pallet (2000lbs) of protein multiple times with my 1/2 ton Titan. Don't even know it's in the bed.

I have a '97 Z71 short wheel base 1/2 ton that I use to carry a pallet of feed in pretty often....A buddy on the lease tried the same thing in his king ranch 1/2 and broke a spring....
