Driving Trip.....What To See And Do???

We are planning a driving trip in October and I'm looking for some suggestions of routes and things to see.

Thinking about a general route of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming....west to Idaho, Oregon....south through California.....then back east to Arizona, New Mexico...back to Texas.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Utah is absolutely beautiful if you have never been.

Carlsbad in New Mexico, Durango has a nice train, west of Durango in Cortez (I think) has some nice Adobe ruins, keep going to four corners, followed by Grand Canyon. Never been to Wyoming, Oregon or Idaho. But coming down California is a must for Napa Valley, San Fransisco, and Pacific Highway 1 south of San Fran. I am sure there are a lot more things but I have only done this in sections.

Crater Lake in Oregon (if the snows haven't closed it down), Oregon coast, redwoods and sequoias in California, Arches NP in Utah, and that time of year I'd come home thru Chama NM to see the elk.

If I were anywhere near Rocky Mountain National Park, I would go through it. Breathtaking ! We just made the trip to Yellowstone, two days there, came back through Teton Park and Jackson ( tourist trap ), but RMNP was definitely the highlight of the trip for us.

Use the National Park Senior Pass if you qualify. $10 to see some of our most beautiful national treasures. I have family in Idaho and last year we headed north to South Dakota for Wind Cave, Custer State Park, and Mt Rushmore. The flag lowering ceremony is a must at Rushmore if you are a veteran. Then we headed west to Yellowstone for a few days. On the return trip, we dropped down through Utah to hit Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyons.

This year we're going clockwise. Carlsbad Caverns, Vegas, Reno, to Crater Lake, then out to the Oregon coast for a couple of days, before heading up the Columbia River back into Idaho. The return trip isn't set for this year, but we would like to go through the Durango area and see Mesa Verde NP.

                Enjoy your travels.

Gila cave dwelling national monument was very interesting IMHO. If you drive anywhere near by while in New Mexico it is definitely a must see.
