The changing Port Aransas skyline, a sign of the times

Anyone that's taken the ferry to Port A in the last year, has probably seen the West Sirius drill rig in storage mode on the Aransas side of the ferry landing. Last night another large platform moved in.

The Lydia Ann channel is trippy. I am standing in ankle deep water and a giant freighter is less than 20 yards in front of me heading out.

They just moved the other rig in last night and it's bigger.

how do those things stay afloat? They look like they'd sink like a rock.

I was looking at the upper part of those rigs. Does anybody know how those are welded? The pipe thickness, rods and rod size used, amps, etc.? That would be one heck of a welding project.
