Special draws for Cali elk hunts (including nonresident)

    Guys,

20 years of hunting here and this is the first I've seen these special draws for elk and black bear hunts.

As I read this (disclaimer: read quicky on a hot Sunday afternoon after a nap and a 3:30 wake up call to hunt today), there is no preference given for residents over non-residents. A non resident elk tag is pricy ($1,100) but in these hunts where a few tags are issued, it's a wildlife management hunt. I have a friend who drew a muzzleloader elk tag in the annual drawings, and the DFW guys told them where to go and find the elk.

I post this because several of these hunts in central Cali are tulie elk- the American and Roosevelt elk are in the northern areas near Oregon. Non-residents who want to shoot a tulie elk to harvest all north American elk generally hunt under the Private Land Management program where tags are sold at "market prices", generally over $10k for a tulie bull tag.

Colusa is 3 hours north of SJ, I duck hunt that area. Mendocino also 3 hours. Santa Barbara elk hunting?

    Hunt hard- life's too short!

Do u have to buy license to apply? How much is application fee? What area would you apply for first?

Do u have to buy license to apply?
      > No, I'm pretty sure you don't. You'd need to create an ID in the Cali ALDS system, I used my drivers license number as ID. If you're drawn the you'd buy the license and tag, or if not in 7 days they go to the next person drawn and you're done. ...... Unless Jerry Brown comes to track you down.

      How much is application fee?
      > $11.00 per hunt

What area would you apply for first?
      > I put in for Colusa bull and the 2 Mendocino ranch bull draws.

Ya I didn't have that with me either. The problem is you have to fax them a picture of it and I'm sure they are closed now

FYI, you still have an hour to send in since Cali is 2 hours behind!

Hey guys, I posted it on TBH within 20 minutes of receiving the email from Fish And Wildlife. It's been years since I've had to provide them my hunter education number.

To answer the question I received in PM, see the map. Siskoyou and Humbolt Counties are up north on the Oregon border, and hold Roosevelt (west side) and Rocky Mountain elk (east side). Tulie elk are further south. CA is the only state with all three species (that I'm aware of anyway). I have never heard of high fence hunting for elk here, btw.

The 2nd grey area from the north is the area in the Hamilton Range, east of the SF Bay and Silicon Valley/ San Jose. There is a healthy Tulie elk herd in the Hamiltons, and an annual draw for a bull elk tag in my county.

If you are ever out here, and want to see Tulie elk, in the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge (Los Banos, central valley) is 1 of 2 breeding areas for Tulie elk. It's a mile square, high fenced area with some impressive breeding bulls. San Luis has multiple areas for waterfowl hunting, and one called Salt Slough has ponds I've hunted across Salt Slough from the breeding area. I've been calling ducks at sunrise and had elk bugling a couple hundred yards away.

Two of my hunting partners who live south of SJ have seen tulie elk grazing on the east side of Hwy 101 at the very south end of SJ near Morgan Hill. The owner of a winery in Gilroy I shot pigs said he saw them several times browsing in his vineyard.
