    Cull Question

I am kicking myself for possibly passing on a cull last weekend. He appears to be a really healthy 3.5 year old with a nice high 4pt rack on one side and what appears to be a spike on the other side. The spike side is not sharp at the end and I held off because it looked like it may have been an injury in velvet that caused him not to grow a full rack on that side. Opinions? He was pushing some other bucks around and will probably get to breed some does. Did I screw up?

If he is 3.5 I would have shot him.

It depends on what that side of the antler is...did it break off? did it get injuried while in velvet..if not then he is not a cull until you see him next year to see if he is still that way.....

Not sure where you are hunting so that is certainly relative. We hunt in Duvall county and 3.5yr or older 7pt or less we shoot as a cull.

              like this?
i shot this one in aspermont 2 years ago, he was 5 plus years old. fully mature. he needed to go. no one ever saw him(although they hardly ever hunt the place) and he was the very first deer to walk out that opnenin morning. started my season off with a bang. his body was huge. but he may have scored 50 lol. still a cool deer.

Does the meat taste different when there a cull? LOL. Would have been a cull for sure on my lease. Let the air out of him.

The spike could be from an injury. If his 4 side was good, giving him another year won't hurt. If he doesn't come back normal, then kill him.
