    Kayak Question

What would be the best length for all around use fresh water and salt?

    #2
12-14. Longer tracks better for long distance. I prefer the shorter end for maneuverability.

14 can be a bit of a pain moving around but once in the water it is better than 12..10 kinds sucks for any distance. 12 is the sweet spot..I have a 9 and change, 12 and 14 and change my favorite is the 14 if I'm going to be paddling distances but it is heavier to put in/longer in the back of the truck just depends on what you want. I'd rather lug it in and out of the truck and paddle easier all day in the 14 but most prefer 12 I'm a big guy though and don't mind the weight much...also as far as maneuvering it in water mine has a rudder. My 14 with a rudder turns better than a 12 without

              I got a 10 footer and wish I would've went with 12. 2 foot makes a big difference

I have a 12 footer, hubby has a 14 footer and son has a 6 footer. Aside from transporting issues we all want to be on the 14 footer since it tracks in the water better - not as responsive to body movement. Our son complains all the time - but hey it's character building right. The little stinker is also a heckuva angler on it too. Crazy huh?

I had a 12.5 that was my favorite. Had a 14 but was more than what I needed.

If your covering a lot of water go 14 it's going to track better and generally paddles better you size is a factor if your a bigger guy and plan on decking it out with a lot of extra features and electronics you gonna want to go with a 14 just for the weight rating if you want to test before you buy look for a Austin canoe and kayak"Ack" or a fishing tackle unlimited near you both rent kayaks for like 40$ I personally have a 12 footer and does everything I need but once I got into going off shore for kings and sharks I really wish I would have went with a 14fter

You can get a 12 or a little shorter and put a rudder if you want to

The bigger it is the faster you can paddle and track better. I have a 12 footer and it is the largest I would personally go for hauling in the back of my truck and loading/unloading by myself. There have been a few times I've had to tote that sucker a ways to put in when duck hunting and I am not sure I would want a bigger one. I definitely wouldn't go smaller than 12 unless it was for a kid.

Thanks very much for al the info. I was looking at a 13.4. Just trying to get something that I don't have to sell and get another due to my lack of knowledge on them.

Mine is a Ride13.5 and I love it. I have run down the Sabine River and also 1.5 miles of the gulf coast and it works well for everything.
