    Building my AR have questions

I bought a complete DPMS lower with collapsable stock the other day and I pick it up tomorrow.

I am looking for an upper and don't really know what to look for and where.

I know I want a flat top - don't care about the carry handle or rear sight - probably going to go with the front sight housing - but I am not sure which brands are good to go with, which ones I should stay away from? In regards to the bolt carrier group - I see there are a number of different options or I could just order the standard BCG - will that suffice? I am not looking for anything special - just something that will not fail on me. I am looking at THIS - good to go or is this a no no?

    Thanks

Get a flat top you'll like it a lot more.

There are three or four threads on the first two pages that have a lot of info.

Several of the gurus have stated that the 1-9 twist barrels don't stabilize the heavier bullets like the 1-7 twist barrels do. It may not matter in your set-up, just passing on what I've heard & been told.

Read this. It is not going to give you a direct answer, but it will help you to make an informed decision. Actually, this is probably more information than what you need.

I am far from being an expert, but I am going with 1x9 twist in my build project. I did a quick search for ammo, and most of the .223 and 5.56 were around 50-55gr. Nothing I saw was above about 75gr (probably better out of 1x7 twist), or less than about 40gr. This is what is driving my decision to use 1x9 twist.

I will probably do some reloading, and can tune loads for specific needs if needed, but most of the COTS ammo will be in the range appropriate for 1x9 twist (as I understand it). Besides, mostly this particular gun will be a open sight plinker, so beyond the 200 yard mark will generally be outside of my capability with open sights. For my next build I am looking at a different caliber (6.8SPC or similar) that I will likely hunt with.

        Anyway, I hope this helps.
