I recently went to purchase a new firearm and before I was going to get all the paperwork started I asked the owner of the store(who I know personally) to look at my license. I hold a CDL Class B license due to being a coach and having to drive a school bus. My license was renewed last August and my address that is on my license is my PO Box only, my old license had both the PO Box and the physical address on it. Well of course the owner said I'm sorry, but I can't sell you a gun without the physical address. Where I live the Post Office does not delivery mail and we have to get our mail at the PO Box. he then told me to go and get a state ID card and that would work. Back in May I had to go and get a new license due to the state making me get a physical every year before I can legally drive a school bus, so I went back to the drivers license office and talked to the man that had issued my license and told him what the problem was. He then stated that there have been a lot of CDL with the same problem of getting there mail at a PO Box and that the law had changed either this past September or the year before and you can no longer hold a state ID card if you have a drivers license and if you receive your mail at a PO Box that is all they are allowed to put on your license. I told him I knew it wasn't his fault , but that this was a stupid, ridiculous law and that I thought it was a violation of my 2nd amendment rights and what representative or legislature had gotten this law passed and he didn't know.So I asked him what I could do in order to be able to purchase a firearm, he said the only thing he could think of was for me to pay another $11.00 and get a temporary license that would have both my PO Box and my physical address on it and would be good for 45 days and then I would receive another hard copy license in the mail with just my PO Box on it. Then he advised me to call his supervisor in Lufkin and talk to her and try to keep getting passed on up the line until I was able to reach the head of the drivers license department in Austin. Well I called and had to leave a message and she called back the next day and was not very nice during my conversation with her. I explained all of the above and stated that I thought it was a violation of my 2nd amendment right and she got very rude and very emphatic that no it was not. She told me to put a mailbox out in front of the house after I had already explained that the post office did not delivery here. She did not really want to let me speak to her boss or pass me on up the line as she would not tell me a name or number. Her only suggestion was to go back to the drivers license office and pay another $11.00 and get the physical address put on my license and ask for a special mailing to my PO Box, but that I would not receive any other mailings from the state such as notification of my license expiring, or my notification of my bus driving physical expiring, or if I got a ticket any notification of where to appear to pay the fine because all they would have is my physical address.
Sorry for the long read, but was wondering if anybody on the GS had had this same problem and if anybody know where and how to fight this law and to try to get it changed.
Grits
