I want an AR, but I want it to be light weight. I don't know squat about them. How much would one cost me, and is it better to build or buy? What brands should I consider? I'd like to keep it around $1200 or under preferably

In order to get a QUALITY light gun your going to spend big bucks. Meaning one with carbon fiber handrail and such.
If you just want a CHEAP light gun then look at the carbon guns like the suggested bushmaster. There is a reason they are cheaper!
Lots of negative feedback about carbon receivers.
Best bet would be to build your own using the nicest and lightest materials you can find in your budget. Minimizing all the gizmos you put on one helps keep weight down.
Also consider barrel weight. Pencil barrels cut weight quite a bit.
