This happened at the shooting in Houston on Memorial Drive, the Sunday before Memorial Day. There was a guy that was originally listed as a second suspect that was shot. Later it was determined that he was a neighbor that was armed and trying to assist. I never heard if it was the shooter or the police that shot him.

I would think in a mass shooting situation like in Dallas or BR it's best you get out of the way and let the responding officers and SWAT do their job. Now seeing an officer in some place or on the side of the road in a fight and no help then it's game on!

But I want to go full commando and use all the knowledge of gunfights that I amassed reading TBH!

        I totally agree with you.

You'd get shot by LEO as you're not in uniform and considered as a combatant.
How are they to know you're helping them?

Just go home if a shootout starts.

its a choice only you can make at the time and place, if you intend to try to approach the officer , he needs to know your coming, so how do you tell him your intentions?
if you run toward him with gun in hand, he may very well shoot you...

if you distract him well enough to let him know your there to help, he and you may get shot by the bad guy....

can you even get close enough safely to really help him?

will you actually be helping him, after all a major part of his job is protecting others,, will you become a burden instead of a help, he does not need the responsibility of trying to protect a civilian who is trying to help, but he will now have to consider you along with himself and everyone else.......

do you have what it takes to kill someone? because that may be what it comes down too, if you are not sure, don't move in!

probably the most effective a civilian can be in general is keeping his back safe,,, you may not have to get real close for that.....

there is a heck of a lot that needs to be considered in about 1-2 seconds,,,

for me, i am probably going to get involved, even though i am retired i still carry a badge, and i will clip it to the front of my shirt,, an advantage most do not have, but i do not have body armour with me,, so i will have to be very aware of what cover and concealment is available, if i get shot i may not be any help,,,,,, so what can i do? i am still an above average pistol shot, and way above average at longer ranges,,, i will use that to my advantage, but i still have to make sure the officer knows i am with him, not against him before i fire a round,,

in the end there is no correct answer, only a mind set, to do or not do..... if running the guy over is the best option,, im gonna need a front end work,,,, for all those who consider helping, deadly force is deadly force, a car is no more or less deadly than a bullet,,, either way your going to be investigated, and tried in the media,,,,

Yep. Be a good witness but if there's a ground and pound going on, please step in. Announce your presence, say you're there to help the officer, and kick the crook right in the taint (preferably with steel-toes boots).
