    Out of State UTV Trade

I'm looking at trading for a UTV that's in Oklahoma but, the owner doesn't have a title. Is that a red flag or is than not a big issue? If it's not an issue what all do I need to do to get the title in Texas? Will there be any taxes? What all do I need to know about trading out of state.

Not a big issue. I believe they don't issue titles in Oklahoma. Atleast when my buddy bought his sxs, when he lived up there, he didn't get a title from the dealer. As far as getting it titled here, can't help ya.

I would be worried about a potential lien on it. If he took out a loan to buy it and didn't pay it off getting a title will be a problem. Even if OK doesn't issue titles on UTVs he should have a Manufacturers Statement of Origin.

I did ask him if he had the manufacturer statement of origin and he's going to look for it. If he does have it does that mean there's no lien and it isn't stolen or should I get the VIN and still verify both of those? Also, just making sure I'm understanding the state regulations correctly. By law I do need a title for a UTV in Texas and once I go get the title I'll have to pay taxes on the KBB/NADA value of the vehicle? (Even though no money was exchanged)

Thanks for all the help just trying to make sure I have an understanding of what I need and what I need to do if I make the trade.

If he has the MSO its a safe bet that there is no lien and he legally owns it. I have no idea on taxes...

In Oklahoma you only get a title for them when you pay the taxes. A lot of people choose to not pay the taxes and just go without a title.

Can you go without the title here in Texas also or is it a must?

You can, somewhat, you'll never be able to trade it in.

Is it a friend or somebody who you don't know from craigslist or another web source?

If the later, I'd be scared it's stolen and for sale.

                        It's the latter.

I just got rid of my 2005 mule and all I had was the MSO. The new owner used the MSO to get a loan on the UTV. Loan Officer said that in late 2005 Texas started requiring UTVs to be titled.

                            I think it's a risky transaction.

When I bought my mule, the Kawasaki dealer told me that off roadblocks weren't titled, the certificate of origin was all I would get.
