Where does the gulf ocean water start to get clear?

We live in Houston and we go fishing in the gulf a lot around Freeport. The water is always cloudy. How far down the coast do I have to go to get to blue water that's more like the Caribbean the Galveston?

I am trying to talk the wife into going more as any help is appreciated

You really need to get deep to get in the pretty stuff out in the Gulf amigo...although there is some outstanding & crystal clear areas in the Lower Laguna Madre bay system.

Along Texas beaches? You gotta get real lucky to find clear water. But it's usually better further south. Galveston is just nasty, no offense.

I caught this a few months back in Corpus

It all depends on winds and current conditions

This past Saturday, blue line was about 10 miles off the beach at Port O'Connor. Kingfish were thick. Water was gin clear. Spadefish, triggers, and sharks were all visible swimming around the rig legs. Later in July/August blue water will push within 3-4 miles of the beach. If you are looking for clear water at the beach, as previously mentioned, south padre is your best bet.

Yea, clear water at the beach will have you traveling to South Padre, or east to the Mississippi/Alabama beaches

Texas beaches are pretty gross compared to some. South Padre is the prettiest beach on the Texas coast. Alabama beaches are surprisingly gorgeous...clean blue water and white sand.

If you are talking about offshore, sometimes good blue water can be had as close as 10-15 miles out from Galveston. Obviously, that's dependent on wind, tide, run-off, etc. I've fished many of days 20-40 miles out of Galveston in mid to late summer and had water clarity from 30-50 feet.

I've also had some days where 30 miles out, the water is that emerald green color; which is not so great. Best fishing is when that blue water comes in. No question.

As for beach front, I've seen Galveston as good as a few feet water clarity a few times. Doesn't happen often.

If you really want a blue beach, head east. Once you pass Mobile Alabama, you will hit blue water and white sand.

As everyone said, it moves in and out depending on conditions.

I can show you a pic of the color of water at any given time in the Gulf of Mexico. Just let me know when.

I'll tell you that the Red Sea is surprisingly amazing, but around Texas I like straight south from Corpus

happens about 2 weeks a year in Gorda/Galveston area in ~August when the winds die down.
