Watering system for trees and plants while you are not there?

I have been wanting to plant some pecan trees at my property ... I may only get down once a month or so ... Wanting to build a self watering system ( drip system) so they don't die before they get established... Anybody have something like that they have engineered .. ?

My boss built a system with timers, zones, and sprinkler heads for his 8 acre pecan orchard this year. Lot of underground piping.

We used to put a small hole in a 5 gallon bucket, but that wouldn't a month

        Do you have a well?

What will be the source of the water? Faucet, rain collection or other?

If you don't have a well get you a elevated 500 gallon tank used for diesel (make sure clean) and run your drip tubing from it to your trees with a drip nozzle on each, should last a month on a slow drip. If you have a well than just run the lines on that from a cheap battery powered timer.

I fill a 1500 gallon water tank and have 1/2" tubing running to the trees with drip ends. I only run to 5 trees and it drains the tank pretty fast 3-4 days. But I can stay away for 12-15 days with no issues since after 3-4 days of being watered it takes a while to dry out. And IMO it's ok for trees to try and search for water a little.

Look here for the best tubing prices that I could find.

Treegator® is the original slow-release watering bag for trees. Buy now or find a local reseller. The easiest way to effectively and efficiently water a tree. Deep water saturation promotes root growth and reduces transplant and drought shock. Fill once per week for most new tree plantings. Made in the USA since 1991.

Great info guys!!!! Yes I have a well but was thinking of using totes for the resivoir .... That way I don't end up having a hose bust and run my well for however long I'm away.... I have a couple of spare totes at my place....

How far do you need to run it? 1/2 poly is about $13 per 100'. Put $15 timer from lowes with pressure reducer and some drippers and you are set.

                            Sounds like a plan

I just ran 3/4" PVC and used PVC fittings to get me to 3/4" female coming out of the ground, then used adapter to go to 1/2 drip tubing hose and encircled the trees drip line. Bought a cheap 4 station outdoor timer at Lowes to automate the system. Drilled holes in 3/4" PVC to water my blackberries! Just finished everything this past week as I was tired of hand watering for 5-6hours per week!
For the drip system you will need to regulate your pressure down to 25psi and put a good filter strainer in-line. Hunter makes a good setup for this but you will have to buy at a local irrigation place as lowes/home depot were weak in this area.
