Hunting with a target release (Carter, Stan)

Does anyone hunt with a handheld release that you have to "cock" like a Stan or Carter? I have fell in love with my target release this 3d season and really want to use it for hunting. I shoot it with back tension not by pulling the barrel (trigger). The reason I am hesitant is because these releases have a click when you fire them. (not a true back tension click) but the click of the sear falling.

Will this spook the game or is it overshadowed by the sound of the shot?

I've been shooting back tension on deer for prolly 5-6 years..never had any problems!

IMO The sound of the shot happens so close to the sound of the sear dropping, that if the animal was going to jump the string, it would happen either way. Just make sure you are shooting at a relaxed animal and it should be just fine.

Lots of people do it every year with no problems!

I've been shooting a thumb triggered release for years with no problems. However, a friend of mine felt that his release was too loud for animals that were within 10 yards, especially on those super still mornings and evenings. He switched to a Carter Whisper and loves it.

Carter Chocolate Addiction since 2004. Range, 3D & Hunting - it works consistently and note, nothing jumped when I dumped the string.

I usually have time to cock it and hang from the d loop well before they are in range. I do this while stalking also. Have had a few close calls were they showed up and I was rushed to get it on there, but so far they have not( heard) caught me cocking it on the loop. I use a Stan just x. And wish I would have started using one years ago. My only thing I don't like about it, is i am afraid I will loose it. But carry a spare in my pack in case. I just re read your post, and no I have never had one spook at the release of the shot. I thought you meant cocking it to place it on the loop, that is what I was afraid of when I first started using one.

Cocking the release and placing it on the d loop is a must when hunting (I feel). I've been hunting with my Carter Target 4 for two years now and have never had an issue. Just don't forget it at camp!!

Been doing it for years. I used to use one for target and tournament shooting and then change to a caliper for hunting but no need to do that, I use my Carter Insatiable all year and it doesnt make any sense (IMO) to change over just for the hunt.

That looks like footage from a buck Drake arrowed several years ago in Sonora.

That was me shooting a buck on Drake's ranch a few years ago. An 11 pointer that came into a spot where Drake shot his first P&Y. One buck, at the far side of this herd (BULL - top right corner), is standing near the bush Drake shot his first P&Y.

We hunted and filmed video together for several years there on his ranch.

The buck in my dual image out take at the top, was shot in Krivoman's ranch near Lampasas. Archery1st, Krivoman and I hunted South Texas and Mitch's ranch for a couple of years. That buck was nicknamed "Wide Klyde." That was the same year Zach Kolda was killed in Iraq, serving with the US Marine Corps....a friend of ours, we met, when he worked at Austin Archery Country. Sika remembers these years, we all shot competitively together, the Austin area TBH contingent.

Here's Wide Klyde on Mitch's ranch. Carter Chocolate addiction at 24 yards from a brushed in ground blind.

Here's the 11 pointer from Drake's ranch near Sonora. Shot was made at 28 yards with a Carter Chocolate Addiction 4 finger. The video frames are from those 3 images above. Drake was hunting another setup that evening. Location was the oat patch, right out in front of the ranch house, blind down in a low draw draining off that field.

Here's an out take of Drake and I during those years on his ranch. Drake and I hunted several years together and shot a lot of 3D tournaments as well. We drove to Arizona and competed against the West coast best and placed in the top 20 shooters out of hundreds...hunter class. Event was sponsored by Hoyt. We have spent a ton of time together afield...as well as shooting and filming video. Miss those years.
