The biggest down side to the phone is memory required for the maps. When you have data service maps will continually upload. When you dont you need to of saved that area to your memory.

Garmin bought out Inreach. I'm hoping next year they will produce a really good GPS mapping system with the same text and SOS abilities as the current Inreach. I don't like carring my Montana 600 because it's big so I use my phone majority of time in back country. I mainly fish bays so GPS isn't that big of a deal for me, but I have a buddy that uses an IPAD mini for his GPS. Found a cheap deal at Walmart for like $120. Pretty much GPS and music is all he uses it for. I don't know which software he uses but pretty sure it's a company on 2cool.
Navionics has a great app. I think it was around $10 and you can down load lake and bay maps. I quit using my lowrance after I got the app. I have it on my phone and an Android tablet. They even have a portable sonar unit that pairs with it.

Yea im aware of the geo tag on the phone.

So im using the VP program with my magellan handheld and looks like there is a few hundred spots I need to have on hand. Some are bay spots which I really dont need but the offshore ones are a must. I have a samsung S7 with plenty of storage so I MAY look into trying to use that as a GPS, The thing I DONT like is that I cant remove the battery and just go from 0 to 100% like I used to on my S5.

As far as mapping I dont need a mapping system offshre (Its all blue lol) so all i really need is the GPS numbers and coords/ location/bearings as back up. I know I can always email a word file to myself with all the coords but I specifically want a hand held. What I have works fine and I have it set up where all my units on my equipment is WGS 84 in Degrees Decimal Minutes for #s and every thing is in sync. I just wanted something newer and nicer that dont run on AA batteries.
