Today, I had to run by a house that my company is working on, to check up on some work that my coworkers had done. I ring the doorbell bell and after what seemed like forever, an elderly gentleman opens the door. He apologizes for taking so long and welcomes me in from the heat.
He asks what he could do for me and I state the reason why I was there. Once he processed what I told him, he asks if he could give me a card. I of course said yes and he hands it to me. I immediately recognize the card because he had given me one back at Christmas. My wife and I had gone to Cracker Barrel and he was standing in the gift shop area handing them out to whoever would take one. His story at the time was that he had just lost his wife of 64 years and these cards were his way of honoring his love for her. He spoke of Faith, God and to love those around you. His words were moving given the situation and the time of year. Fast forward to today. After he hands me the card, he proceeds to tell me that he has handed out over 4000 and that he hopes his words have helped others. What he said next almost brought me to tears. He said that he was diagnosed with cancer last week and that they were moving him to hospice tomorrow. He was refusing any and all medical treatment. Without ever losing his positive attitude, he said "I'll soon see her again"
Mr McMurray, I've only met you twice, with both times being very soon after you going through the most devastating times in your life. But you only radiated positive joy for the life you have been given. All you wanted was to pass that on to others. May your final walk be your finest!!!
Here is the card he gave me:
