Dogs and chicken don't mix well...need help with a shock collar.

I got some chickens last weekend. Put them in the coop/run. They have been in there the whole time.

This evening I let them out for a while...one just to see what they would do and most importantly, see what my Basset hound would do.

He sat there for a few minutes, then just kinda walked over and followed them.. and bam, he was off like a rocket after them.

I got him on a leash and let the chickens feed for a while without incident...

So...does any one have a shock collar around the Austin / Georgetown area I can borrow for a few days. It should not take long to train that stubburn arse dog.

If the chickens can’t outrun a basset hound, they deserve to die.

I didn't want the chickens to run to the next county. One chicken was AWOL for about an hour.

He can run fast...for about 5 seconds. The he is done. I may try again tomorrow.

As stuburn as he is, he would harass the heck out them birds and I would never get any eggs.

Put a electric fence around the coop. My labs hit it a couple times and totally changed their perspective. Now they all wonder around the back yard with no issues. Also doesn't hurt at the same time that they understand that you don't approve in a strong manner.

shock collar would def do the trick but he needs to be introduced and know what it is and what it means to be shocked before you just put it on him and zap him.

he knows what it means to be shocked. I have a under ground electrical fence system. He knows the boundaries well. I am on 5 acreas and he can roam most of it.

Any suggestions on how to break him from chasing the chickens. Bad dog doesn't seem to work.

LIGHT HIM UP. don't listen to that. I worked with field trial dog trainers for years in highschool, they dang sure shocked as punishment and it worked well for them. I own hunting dogs, when they run a deer instead of a hog they get shocked and guess what??? .....works great for getting them to stop running deer too.

Pretty simple really, if he goes after the chicken turn the collar up and give him one that he will never forget, 2-3 times AT MOST of that and he will never look at a chicken again.

Tritronics 550 pro can control up to three dogs. I also have a dogtra 1/2 mile one dog system that works very well
