For those of you that run distance or bike long distance and use gels.

Who here uses Gels during their long runs? I was introduced to them during the Half Marathon I ran on Sunday, sadly I didn't know they existed and now enlightened with my new knowledge it would seem that timing is everything when they are used and it varies from person to person because of the absorption rate.

Given that the body starts to run out of muscle contained fuels between 40 and 60 minutes into a run and switches to ketosis for fuel, and it takes roughly 45 minutes for the body to digest and begin to disperse the electrolytes in the gel, so in closing what times during a race are you supplementing with gel?

First one half hour in, also wash down with an electrolyte drink (I use Nunn tablets in one water bottle and water in the other). Every body is different so you will need to find a timing that works best for you.

1st one 20 min pre-race & then 1 every 3-4 miles depending on course and how I feel

They were a complete game changer for me, not only for race performance but for how I felt post race

That's what I was told, with taper down diet tactics and use of Gels the results are pretty wild.

This last sunday i got off to a great start and set a good pace, then it started to fall apart. The race Marshall led everyone off course and by the time they realized it and got everyone turned around it was a mess. The race ended up being 15.1 miles and at mile 11 the wheels blew off, running in the heat took its toll and my calves began to cramp badly, every time I attempted to run I would almost end up on the ground. So with what dignity I had left I walked to the finish at a 2.35.44.

It was a great learning experience and look forward to the next one....

Congrats of finishing the race and you should hold your head up. 99% of people would have quiet under the circumstances...

Congrats on finishing the jalapeno I was there also. I usually run At least a half each month, and right now working on training for my next full. I personally dont use and supplements for halfs, mainly because I don't feel like my body needs them. Now on fulls I am the polar opposite I do a pre race one about 20 minutes before. The take another at mile 6 (around 50 minutes or less) after that I take one every 4 miles. For me the things really mess with my guts so I cant use the "gu" brand I use and all natural brand called axcel gel.

Texanhoyt , Thanks for the timing info brother, looks like the next one will be the "Wildfire" in Denton..

Looking at my pace vs timing, digestion , 10k time was 1.04 . I was thinking 6 mile Mark was a good starting point.

if you are running out of fuel and hungry you are too late.

put yourself on an interval and refuel. Candidly when i ran long distance (I'm back up to 5 miles and running 6 days a week) it was a big change for me to eat before i ran and then eat while i ran. my energy never dropped off as badly and more important my recovery time was shorter.

I have been using HAMMER Gels for 20 years. They have no simple sugars and complex carbs unlike many competitors. They recommend taking with just water and no electolyte drink. Best of all their phone reps are great race and nutrition advisors. Call them at 800
336-1977 and you can get samples and excellent advise. Congrats on being out there and competing.

Its like walking but only faster. Ive only been able to do it under life threatening situations and or a Drill Sergeant threatening me with nasty things if I didn't.

I use the Gu Energy gels when on my bike rides. I usually only break them out if I am going over 30 miles. Once I start to feel like I could use a boost I take one and then continue to take them about one an hour until I finish. I also use Nunn tabs in my water as well.
