    A/C guys question

My capacitor went out on my two ton ac unit. The guy that came out is charging me $65 for just the capacitor. Is that too high?

I have no problem with the service call for $75 but the price on the capacitor seems really high.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

As hot as it is right now, I wouldn't complain about him charging $10 or $20 too much. Now if it was $50-100 too much, different story. Doesn't sound too high to me. Man's got to make a little money.

I bought one for $30 last week fixed my brother's AC. $65 does seem a little high.

Ive had to replace mine a couple times and I think it was about that. Total fix including parts was around 120 I think. Been a couple years. May have been around 40 for the part

With the high demand for his services I'd say you're lucky he's only marking it up to $75. I did my last one myself. Picked it up at Granger for something like $30... but if an A/C guy was already at my house I would have gladly let him do it for your price.

That is probably on the cheap side.

You call a company to come to your house, with a van full of parts, driven by an hourly paid employee with full benefits, worker's comp and liability insurance.

Then he has to diagnose the failure and get an approval for the repair and make enough money to keep the lights on and grow his company.

No, it's not too much. Can you buy it yourself and do it cheaper? Yes. But for a professional to do it, it is not too much.

If you think it is too much then decline the repair and do it yourself.

Be glad you don't live in Austin, our least expensive capacitor is MUCH more than that.

Thanks for the input. Couple years ago he only charged me around $20 for the capacitor that went out in our other ac.

I know someone that was charged over 300 for labor and for the capacitor

Go to Home Depot or Graingers website and buy your own ...I usually kept 2 at the house before I bought my New unit..They were 18.00 bucks and I was getting charged 65-70

                      Can't argue with that.

                        Bam. X2

I ran calls in Austin for a long time. And we charged 235 for a service call and capacitor. So 65 is nothing.

Yeah $20 is what you can pick one up for at the store. Reminds me, I need to go get one to have on hand.

$25-30 off the net. $35-40 from the local parts house here. $65 to be picked up and delivered to your house isnt bad. Its the labor that gets high. I do mine myself, but $65 + labor sounds reasonable especially if he gave you a warranty on the parts/labor.

                              What Rat said.
The price is reasonable for calling out a licensed technician. If it was the cap for the compressor or a dual for both comp & fan motor could be $50 wholesale. If just a fan cap probably more like $8-$15. But.....that tech spent time and money going to school and even more time in the field learning his trade. Your paying for the knowledge of how to diagnose and repair. Not to mention the business side.

                              It's like this...

A biker goes to his heart doc and complains about Doc charging crazy money for his heart surgery.
Doc says: “When I do your surgery and I have my hands and tools inside your chest, your heart is still beating and your alive. Have you ever tried rebuilding the engine in your Harley while it was still running?”
Biker says: “You’ve made your point, Doc”
