Let me clarify my comment a bit, I was making a comment being sarcastic to the anti hunting idiots on the original article. Before you BBQ someone and start calling names try to know what you are talking about before hand. Sorry that it offended a few people on here, that was not my intention. I am a hunter and always will be one.

I was hoping you jump in and clarify things. I think most of us figured that was the case but it was a bit of head-scratcher for sure.

Hydrogen sulfide is likely the culprit. It's a byproduct of anaerobic de-nitrification and likely released from the bottom when aerator started running.

I used to help maintain very large aquariums and koi ponds. Your guess is very possible, if the bottom sat for a long time, an abundant of nitrogen could have built up. Then once disturbed, it would be released into the water column. Or with the surface algal bloom, the sunlight could not reach any plant life below, add in the high temperaturesand it would deplete the oxygen and causing the ph level to plummet.
