    Perfect Pool Depth?

So wife and I working with pool designer and he's asking pool depth, 7' deep end on one side or volleyball pool that goes from 3.5' to 5.5' back to 3.5', called a volleyball pool.

Which do you have and which would you recommend?

I have my idea, but was curious what current pool owners view on this is.

My kids are 7 and 9, for what its worth.

I grew up with a volleyball pool... we loved it. Our current pool is 3 -> 5.5 (with bench seating along the 5.5' end) and it works great as well. My boys are 8, 10, 15.

The only issue with the deep end pools is that the kids will get tired eventually and all end up in the shallow end, making your pool feel much smaller than it really is.

We had a deeper end 9 foot for diving and jumping in. We were constantly jumping and flipping and doing races and catching a football and things like that. That was me and my Brothers.

We also had the shallow area with a net set up for volleyball that we used.

The pool my parents built had 2' beach type set up on one end and sloped to 9' deep on the other end. Perfect for four brothers and a neighborhood of kids to jump/flip/dive into. Stairs in the middle of the pool on one side and a bench on the other side. The only problem with that pool is they chose the gunite color as a dark grey, and even with it being as deep as it was it would got HOT in the summer.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

It really will depend on your wants. Growing up with a diving pool was ok but when it came to the wife and I building a pool we went with a "sport" pool. It's 3 1/2ft on each end with the middle being 6 1/2ft. It's been a great recreational pool for countless youth and adult fellowships. Having a deep end is great but people soon get tired of treading water and all wind up in the shallow part. If I had to do it all over again it would be a sport pool.

Our last pool was 4-6-5. It had a lot of benches so people mainly hung out on the benches and the only swimming was from bench to bench. The pool we just built is 4-5-6, which is much nicer for usable area of the pool. We went with a white Pebble Sheen, and are very glad we did. Our pool gets full sun and in the afternoon the temp is 85. Anything darker and we'd probably have 90 degree water.

We have 3.5 to 10' pool with 1, 2-3 person bench and a 1 person bench in the deep end. We have people all over the pool. I would not have a pool with out a deep end for diving and jumping just too much fun for the kids. We have a volley ball set up for the shallow end, works perfect. Our pool is also rather large 115' foot perimeter.

If you're not diving, I'd go for the volleyball. Good for a lot of people, and games.

If you have boys, to me, the deep end is a must for the reasons above.

Our pool is 3-1/2' in the shallow and 9' in the deep end. I'll just say we don't use the deep end very much. My next pool is going to be a cattle trough!

3.5 to 6. Works perfect for everyone to hang in the pool. As mentioned above, pool becomes very small if you go with a deep end. Once the can openers and cannon balls are done, everyone retreats to the shallows. For safety, don't put any dives or slides on it and you should be good. We have had many a party with sometimes 10-15 people in the pool and no injuries.

Definitely go with a light color if you go shallow or the water will be too hot.

Couple thoughts as I grew up with a pool at my parents house and had buddy's with other pools.

We had a 3' shallow end and a 9' deep end. This pool was large for a residential...approximately 30,000 gallons. As stated, it's great to have a deep end for diving, jumping, etc. However, it doesn't get used nearly as much as the shallow end. Also, this pool was large enough to where the shallow end was pretty big as well.

Other cons of having the deep-end -
                          1) cleaning is a pain
                          2) adds a lot of water volume, which makes heating in early spring/fall very expensive and inefficient. Actually, after the first year or two, I don't think they ever heated that pool again. That can be tough for kids in mid march through April.

Buddy had a volleyball style pool. Much better design for smaller pool and/or smaller back yard area. Also, if the deepest you go is 5', it's much better to play volleyball with it being shallower on both ends. Playing in 5' is tough. This pool also could be heated in early spring in a matter of a few hours.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't get a deep-end unless you are building a pool big enough to not compromise the size of the shallow-end, which will end up getting the most use. Also, I believe the OP said 7' deep-end. Not really deep enough for diving, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't go a foot or so deeper for the diving application. Seems like 7' is stuck in between.

Oh and get an attached spa. We used this year-around.

I regret having a deep end in my pool 99% of the time people are where they can at least tippy toe.

Same here. This describes my pool to a T! My kids are 9 and 11 and my pool has been a hit for all birthday parties and sleep overs. We Also have a hot tub above the deeper middle part of the pool.
