    City of Austin Utilities

City said I used 19,700 gallons this month? Does that seem high? I don't own a sprinkler, and I was trying to count how many baths and showers that is.

The numbers I've seen used for estimating water usage is 50-100 gallons per day per person. There are two in my household and we use between 5 -6000 per month when we are not watering the grass or landscaping.

Sounds like you got a water leak somewhere

Contest it. They've had a huge disparity of what people think they're using, and what the city says they used. They don't even come and check the meters, they just estimate and use a tiered system of charging. It's all pretty corrupt really.

Turn off all of your faucets etc & go look at the meter... If it's turning you have a leak...

City of Austin utilities has been a major prob for a few yrs now, most of the time your water usage should be consistent, call them on it they will change your bill.

They are looking for more revenue to hire more BBQ police.

Gotta keep the smoke out of the cali's house.

Well, I got them to refund me for some "overfilling the trash penalties". I had a leak which I fixed. Funny thing is they swear water conservation was important, and when they check the meter it has a black spinner that indicates leaks, yet they waited two months to send me a notice that I might have a leak... Heck, they should have told me the day they checked the meter. Wasted a lot of water and money.

It's spot on if you water every day like crazy. Otherwise, I'd say you've been taken unless you have a giant yard.

You fixed a leak? What was leaking?

I'm not sure what to say

I found out a couple of years ago they weren't even reading my meter. I found that out by actually looking at the meter. It had been covered in mud for months, and there was no way to read it. When they finally came out and read it, it turned out they had over-charged me.

Toilet in guest bathroom was running. Usually something you would catch, but I was working on the road and only home on weekends. Not really a leak, but that's what they called it.

That was your culprit. Running toilets use more water than you think.

I'm surprised you got a refund. I'm in property management we fight them all the time over these types of issues. Good for you for dealing with being put on hold for 30 minutes at a time!

Not for the water, they wouldn't help there. They had charged me about $70 in fees for overfilling my trash. Those fees were removed.
