    Arrow issues; need help

    Hey Guys -

I recently picked up a new bow and I'm in the process of tuning it for my 'whitetail arrows.' That is, the arrows that came with the bow as part of a package. They are cut just right and I saw no need to reinvent the wheel.

However, I also have 6 Easton Axis 340 arrows that are cut, insert to knock, at 28 inches. This is fine. They are nice and heavy and what I want for bigger animals, should I get the chance to hunt them. But, here's the problem - I don't know if they were factory cut and had inserts put in or if someone on ebay jacked around with them - but whatever inserts are at the end of the arrow do NOT fit standard field points. Because the arrow diameter is so small, the insert makes fitting most points all but impossible. I investigated the possibility of having them re-cut, but I was told if I go any shorter the arrow spine will change. So, does anyone know what field points (and broadheads) will fit into these arrows?

    Thanks
    -LaS

    Are they deep six inserts/arrows?

I think so? I'm not sure how to tell. The collars are pretty impressively thick and a 'normal' fieldpoint stops at the first indent because it's too wide.

So is the insert hidden? Do the arrows say "Deep Six" on them? There shouldn't be a collar

Arrows do NOT say 'Deep Six.' Just Axis.

this is off Easton website. looks like they are inserted with the deep six inserts. do a google search for the deep six rps inserts and you will notice they are similar.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't know if the inserts were the 'deep six' ones on non-deep six arrows. Hopefully my silverflame 125's fit these arrows. Otherwise I'll be pretty ripped. >(

                Just put new inserts in.
Remove the nock and drop in a drill bit that is just slightly smaller than the ID of the shaft. This will act as a sliding hammer to knock the insert out. Give the arrow a sling to drive the bit into the back of the insert; once it is about halfway out you can grab it with pliers and pull it the rest of the way out. You only need to hit it a few times to be able to grab it.

This will not hurt the arrow at all, I have driven hundreds of inserts out this way.

Then you can put the ST HIT inserts in and use any broadhead or fieldpoint.

My wife uses the Axis arrows with the ST HIT inserts, she loves them.

Once you remove the inserts, square the arrows on an ASD, then chamfer them using the Axis Chamfer Stone. You done NEED the insert tool (you can use a field point) but it does help to be able to see the insert when you put it in the shaft. The ST HIT insert is hidden in that there is no collar on the outside of the shaft.

You can find everything at Lancaster, Abbey or 3rivers.
