My a/c went out today!! I was told the compressor is out, I'm currently not there at the moment but my wife and kids are. They are planning on going to stay with some family till I get it fixed. The tech said since it's a 12 year old rheem r22 I should replace the whole system quoted my 3600 for full replacement. To fix it it is around 2200. So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna replace the whole ac, he quoted me on a 2.5ton goodman, I've Hurd bad stories on these and started looking online I can get a decent system for around 1700. I use to to do new installs about 10 years ago also have my universal license. It's been a while since I've messed with one should I try to find a good system and install it my self? And save 2000 or let a professional do it? Also does anybody know of any tax rebates going on for upgrading to a better seer rating?

something to consider, if you install, will the new system carry the warranty since it was not professionally installed? -
