    Barbecue pit help

I had a buddy give me this. It was left at a house he bought. I'd like to clean her up and get into smoking and grilling, but I don't don't think this would be ideal for either one. I don't know much about pits, but I've never seen a firebox built halfway into the pit. Most fireboxes are welded directly to the side so that they provide the smoke and some heat, but not open flames. And if it were a grill, you would think it would have more grilling space.I've used the right side to just throw in some charcoal and grill burgers, but was this built this way for any specific reason I don't know of? I could also make some relatively easy modifications if it were worth it. Any suggestions? I'd like to keep it if it's useful.

Use it as just a grill with indirect heat...Sand it hit it with a col of coats of Krylon High Heat paint and you are good to go

I guess its for both indirect and direct heat. You can do a little smoking and a little grilling with it but not a lot of either.

It would be hard to maintain a 225 degree temp for smoking, but it's probably a great grill! Fire it up!

You see the fire box underneath ?? Fill it full of wood, cook on it first, then fix it.

You could put a heavy metal plate at the bottom for more of an indirect cook, but might still have a hard time keeping temps low.

I would weld a plate in there, leaving a gap to the far right. Then, cut the stack off and move it to the left...you'll have a half decent reverse flow smoker and only have spent a couple bucks
