    Food Plot Help

Okay, I have a 55 gal drum full of winter wheat seed a buddy gave me that was leftover from his farm. If all I have is a Honda 25cc tiller, the seed, and a seed/fertilizer thrower (like the ones you have at home), what is the best way to make a little food plot. It doesn't have to be professional or anything. The only reason I'm doing it is because last year I would just throw the seed out by the feeder and it started to grow. So, I figured if I put a little effort into it I might be able to make a nice little food plot. Anyway, any help would be nice. Reading about it, it sounds like I should do this first few weeks of October, considering I am in North Texas.

Yup, first or second week in October. I would fertilize and throw out some pelletized lime as well.

Would also mix in some clover and buck forage oats to go with it.

thanks for all the input. After dispersing the seed what do I do? I read that leaving it on top of the soil is not good? I was thinking just go back over it with the tiller? What do you suggest?

Wouldn't till it in, will bury seed to deep. Can you drag it with an atv using some old fence panels or couple of tires tied together?

I would like and fertilize a couple of weeks before I spread seed. Then I would till again after fertilizer and lime, then seed.

I am not expert, but here are my thoughts. I think you are going to want to plant this around September 15th-October 15th. As mentioned mix in some cover.

                        1. 3 weeks ahead of time spray everything with round up.
                        2. A week later go back and spray again.
                        3. A week later till up the dirt.
                        4. Now wait until you have rain in the forecast. Then go out and spread the seed.
                        5. Drag your seed bed so you soil covering the seed. Or just drive over them with an ATV.
                        6. Pray for rain!

One thing you may try to do is look at some of the food plot websites. They have instructions for planting their stuff there. Here are a couple.

If you go on youtube you can search poor mans plot, lot of info there. Bill Winke has a number of videos on this.

Good luck man, hope your plot turns out well.

I believe winter wheat needs to be planted after average daytime temperature has dropped below 80 degrees or something like that. Usually mid to end of September is a good time in north Texas. If you can time it before a good rain that is best. It will grow good being spread by hand or spreader on top of the ground. You get a better yield with rain. You can make a prettier plot by killing grass and tilling if you have that kind of time to put into it.

If you have an ATV, get you a groundhog maxx. Spray the area after burning or mowing. Disc it up, spray weed killer again. Get you a little diy soil test kit. Add you some lime, and disc it again. Scatter your seed, scatter some triple 13, then drag something over it, just to get a good soil/seed contact. might even help to throw some milorganite over it, just to deter the deer to let it get established. Good luck!
