Hey Guys,
A heads up as I know a lot of us use GPS units. I have a Garmin GPSmap76 unit that when it powers up it will acquire the satellites and then looks good for a while and then all of a sudden it goes blank except a vertical line to the right side of the screen. You can't do anything to fix it except take the batteries out and put them back in. At first you think it is a battery power issue. I don't think it happens on the color units but who knows.
I thought the unit was dying and figured I was going to have to replace it. However I called Garmin and they said there is a problem with the WAAS system and the Government made some recent changes that caused it and that they (Garmin) have to update the software for your unit to resolve it and they are working on it but not sure if it is ready yet. You just download the firmware update, see below.
As a temporary fix on your unit, go GPS Setup Menu, General tab, WAAS, and disable the WAAS and that will take care of the problem. You might also download the latest firmware update of 4.0 and that might resolve it but if not they are working on a update. I don't know if this 4.0 resolves the problem. To see what firmware you have, go to menu "System Info" and that will tell you. Here is where you can download firmware updates.
Also, here is a link to another site that was discussing this issue.
Not sure what other Garmin units are affected but if it happens to you then maybe this will help some of you out.
