Looking for advice on a New Career at an older age.

Just recently the College I was teaching and coaching at dropped golf due to financial reasons. I applied for several golf jobs and got to the interviews but didn't get the jobs for what ever reason. Golf coaching jobs are few and far between. I have coached football, golf and taught at the College level since I was 22. So for 32 years that's what I have known. I don't really want to coach in high school. I would if the right job came along. I have a Masters degree but no teaching certificate for high school. I could get my emergency certificate and be able to coach at that level.

At my age changing careers and occupations is a bit scary.
Do employers want to train people that are my age?
Being a coach I have never made a huge or even a big salary but I have always had benefits and that is very important to me.
My interest would be in insurance either selling it or doing adjusting, real estate, inspection work of some kind. Heck I ve always wanted to operate equipment or drive a truck.

Two things I know I would fail at.
    1. Sitting in an office all day!
    2. Having to wear a suit everyday!

Any advice would be appreciated. Or if anyone has a job or business opportunity available let me know.

    Little bit about me.
Married 28 years, 2 kids, 3 grandkids, coached for 32 years. Masters degree, never arrested, never done drugs, rarely drink, honest, dependable, great with people. I ve talked kids and parents into coming to non scholarship schools that were very expensive so I've been in sales I guess. I am pretty boring I rekon haha!

    Thanks
    David

If you were closer to the coast I would say an NDE manager. With a masters degree in anything, there is a good chance of getting a job running one of these huge corporations on a local/regional level. Specific experience isn't necessarily required. With that being said, where you are at, you could probably get hired by the CAD. The county appraisal district. They will train the right person, my mom has done it for 15 years. She is now a deputy chief of a county appraisal district. They get sent to seminars in Austin pretty regular to update their training or implement new policy.

Thanks Gatorbait. Showing my ignorance. What is a NDE?

My quick advise is to find something related to teaching, coaching or playing golf. That is where your skills and experience are the most marketable.

PM me if you want to talk.

Oh, it is Non Destructive Engineering. Used to be called NDT, testing instead of engineering. Basically inspection companies, they do industrial radiography, ultrasonic testing, dye penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing. They also provide API , or American Petroleum Institute, inspectors. API is a certification that you can get after gaining experience in the field. They do a lot of different inspection types, and make good money. Our old manager couldn't tell you the first thing about the actual work when he first started, but was very organized and good at keeping the regional crews working and the customers happy.

Good luck to you... Listening to Dave Ramsey, he claims a man with your experience, is ten times better than a youngster with multiple degrees.

Keep your head up, don't take the first thing that comes along, you will be unhappy. Unless it is your dream career.

                Thanks for the input Bill!
The most interesting thing about it is I have taught classes with 200 College students in them. But I am not qualified to teach in High school.

David, what about being a golf instructor at a country club? Good luck in the search, brother. A good man with experience and a great work ethic like you will find a good job.

You might want to call all the coaches and schools you guys compete against. Also, make contact with all your ex-students and let them know about your situation. I bet there is someone out there also making a move. Might try private schools too.

Great idea. Get your past players list together, look them up on LinkedIn and you can mail a paper letter c/o their company to reach them. Yes, it's legal and ok to do that- this is survival!

Say after so many years the ended the program and got rid of you- and you're looking for your next challenge- and would love to get a call from them. There may be other jobs outside golf that they can help "coach" out with.

Codie, Commerce just hired a friend of mine last year. He will do great there.

Shane, I don't have my teaching card like many other golf coaches dont but some do. I could get it if i started practicing a lot. But I never play anymore like many country club pros. We coach golf in College cause we have the teaching credentials for the classes that need to be taught in Kinesiology.

Yaqui, I've applied for everything that's come open in College that I had a shot at. The last hope is UT Tyler.

I may have missed how old you are...but I'm 63 and having a great time in my career! I've done the office stuff, the constant traveling from airport to hotel and all over again and grew to HATE IT!

                              1. At least in my experience and several friends...age and industry determines your opportunity and I don't care WHAT they say!
                              2. If you put in a great deal of years in one industry, some employers view you as "set in your ways" and not receptive to new management or trends?
                              3. Do you really want to continue to do what you have been doing for these many years?

As for me, I really thought about what I ENJOYED doing and it ended up NOT being what I had done in the past. So I sought out the best opportunity I could be "EXCITED" about, got it and have flourished.

Soul Searching time Brother....good luck and God Bless!
