    Short Term Dissability

My wife who is a nurse contracted a staff infection in a bad location. She ended up having to have surgery and had a 9" tunnel in her to remove all the staff. We were afraid at the time it was MRSA but it wasn't. She was in the hospital for 4 nights plus a night in the ER. She then was put in IV antibiotics of Vancomycin twice a day for two weeks, she was off work for 4 weeks total. My wife is an independent contractor that does have a salary and vacation, she pays for short term disability thru the company she works thru, it's kind of a work around of Obama care. She paid for the insurance thru Washington Mutual it is only short term disability and she got last October, I never read her plan and just trusted it was the normal stuff. When she filled they informed her that they would have to investigate to see if this was a prior condition and needed to fill out several forms and have 2 years of pharmacy and doctor records. She got all that for them and in the mean time I read her policy and it was only 250 a week and good for 4 weeks so it's not much money. It has now been 3 months and they are still investigating. I am sure they have spent way over the amount they owe on a condition that if was preexisting she would've been dead. I just don't get how companies like this stay in business. Since this happened her company stopped all ties with Washington Mutual and changed back to Aflac which is way better coverage for less money. They lost thousands of dollars over one thousand. Just a heads up if you have Washington Mutual you may want to revisit your policy.

The only short term I ever had to use paid out 100% of lost income for up to four weeks. Then the policy switched to a long term plan for long term.

I had Aflac back in 2011 when I had my first foot surgery. I was out of work for about 4 months. After being out of work for a month and a half I got a check in the mail for $4500. It was well worth the money spent per month for the policy.

I guess my point is to review your policies and don't trust what insurance salesmen tell you because this is not what they were told they had. I can't also stress enough to have emergency funds set aside, it never slowed us down but it was inconvenient.
