    Boat battery question

Does anybody know what the difference is in a 27DC and a 24MS battery? Right now I have all 27DC on motor and trolling motor but was wondering if the 24MS marine battery would work good on my trolling motor. Thanks in advance.

The 24 ms is a starting battery, not a trolling battery, I do believe. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to let me know!

After extensive googling😳 You have been proven correct, sir!

Thank you guys. All I'm seeing on Google is the you want a deep cranking battery for trolling motor.

My understanding is that the 27DC is fine for starting or trolling but the 24MS should only be used for starting.
I bought two 27DC's for the trolling motor and one 24MS for starting the outboard week for the bowfishing boat I'm putting together.

MS is Marine Starting. It provides more cranking amps to turn the motor over even when cold. However the way they are setup they lose their potential if they are run down from a trolling motor etc.

DC is deep cycle. Won't have as many cold cranking amps but they will typically provide more amp hours and they can recover from constant draining and recharging.

So the MS is better for the motor and DC is better for trolling motor? My trolling motor has 2 batteries and the 24 MS are $30 cheaper a piece that's why I'm curious. Right now all 3 my batteries are 27DC but they aren't holding a charge anymore and need to be replaced.

The "right" way to do it is two DC for the trolling motor in series and a MS for the motor and electronics. Spend a little extra you will get more life out of them. But 3 years seems to be the life of the Walmart deep cycles we run.

Also, the 27 is a larger battery so it should have more amp capacity than the 24.

This is how we run on our Pathfinder.

I run Optima batteries in my boat with 150 merc and 24v Motorguide.
2 yellows for trolling and 2 blues for motor and electronics.
I have a switch on the blues so that one is always a backup.
I do have a large suite of Lowrance electronics that pull a lot of power especially the sonic hub 200 watt stereo.

OPTIMA YELLOWTOP for heavy cycling capability and quick recharging
OPTIMA BLUETOP is a Deep-Cycle marine battery for marine/RV applications requiring dual purpose

Some people run a REDTOP for motor.

From everything Ive read about batteries you've got your optimal backwards. The trolling motor needs the deep cycle as every couple trips you will run them down or close to it. The starting battery even with electronics shouldn't be effected and would be better served by the yellow top which are dual purpose.

Not according to Optima and the dealer that rigged the boat. Optima don't rate or list their batteries like other mfgs. The yellow top marine battery is a deep cycle battery made for repeated discharges.
