Possibly 2k was before insurance. We had a kid last year and a couple places would send bills then little while later would receive letter from insurance saying how much of it they paid. If not all of it would receive another bill from original place for less amount.

What is your family deductible with your insurance ? How much copay are you responsible to pay ? If you look at your total bill you get a rough estimate of what you owe.

I would suggest doing these things in this order.

        1) check your credit report
        2) Get an explanation of benefits from your insurance carrier

If it's not clear that you owe anything from that, I'd do nothing.

Medical billing and collections and their interplay with insurance is screwed up beyond all description. And that's before the doctors play games with the bills to get as much money as they possibly can.

Get busy and have another kid. That way if the bill comes you can claim it is for the 2nd kid.

this I can agree with 100%!!! my wife, mom, and wifes friends are all in medical billing. hearing them talk about that crap boggles my mind! dr, office staff, coding, billing, posting, insurance, collections, etc. your bill literally goes through 9 different departments, then to the insurance with who knows how many departments handling it, then back to the drs side of things and through a whole nother process before it gets sent to you!

thats also not including the way they charge and the discounts given! I got a bill the other day for routine blood work. it was originally billed at $4800, the insurance discount was 98%, the insurance paid 80% and I was responsible for $20! its stupid! but then the insurance brags they saved me $4780! cash price (I asked) would have been $80!

and we wonder why medical insurance costs huge amounts of money!

We had a very very similar experience with my wife's anesthesiologist. Her epidural was with an out of network doc, but the only one available at the hospital. We got a bill from the doc at $3k. We appealed it and offered the doc the average in network price, but failed to win that fight. After paying on it for about a year, we stopped getting updated bills. Docs office shows zero balance. We are keeping quiet and waiting...

It's not going away. Someone along the line made an error somewhere. They will figure it out and it may take some time, but they will come back to you once corrected.

I highly doubt any of them will write you a letter stating, "Zero balance." They all do the absolute minimum in terms of effort unless it means getting into your pocket.
