    Good backpack tent

Going to be dropped in to hunt elk for 8 days any recommendations on a good 2 man 3 season tent that wont break the bank.

What time of year? If you are being dropped in, I would go with a good 4 season, just because of crazy weather in the mountains. As always I will say Hilleberg tents, but REI or Altrec are probably your best bet. They have a lot of good deals on last year's tents, discontinued tents, etc.. Lots of good choices. Big Agnes, NorthFace, Kelly, etc..

where n NM? If you are being dropped in do you really want a backpacking tent? If I was being dropped, assuming by horse back, I would go with a bigger more comfortable tent.

Big Agnes...really great gear and customer service.

Do you have a REI near you? If so, go to the garage sale next weekend and pick one up stupid cheap.

            This,

Also do a few days of camping with ALL the gear you plan to take to see what you need. And to see what you can live without.

Three season oughta be fine just stake down the rain fly real good. I have a Sierra Designs that has held up well, but there are several good quality brands.

As far as two man tent, is it just you or are you camping with another person. If it's anyone bigger than a 7yr old girl is get a 3 man tent. They size those things like yeti does its coolers.

I like a good sized vestibule on a rain fly. Makes taking boots and gear off a little easier and is good for making sure your entire pack is covered and stays dry.

One thing I learned that I will get if I am ever able to wear out my current tent is two doors on my next tent. My current Sierra Deisgns has one door in the front. No big deal for crawling in but a bit of an inconvenient PITA for having to scoot out. Just a personal preference.

Hook attachments are easier and quicker but sleeves are stronger. I think a 4 season tent for what you're doing is overkill but if you can find a 3 season with sleeves for the poles that would be preferable but not required.

              Get a GOOD sleeping bag!

Fair enough. Im not married to anyone brand but Big Agnes is a good product. Also, as recommended in another post, I think 3 season is fine for the area and time of year. I also would go bigger (3 person) unless you plan to hunt/hike everyday with a fully loaded pack.

Hilleberg is about as bomb proof as you can get. A little heavier, but stout. That time of year, I would go with a floor less and backpack wood stove.
