    Jacob's Well in Wimberley

Anybody been there before? I am going to go insane if I have to herd 3 kids all by myself this entire 3-day weekend, so I've been looking for places to go. Unfortunately...

Every state park is booked solid

Barton Springs is closed due to a heavy rain

    Hamilton Pool is booked

I know I know shoulda planned earlier, but I had a plan and it fell through. Now I am stuck with last minute ideas. I can always take them to the beach and gawk at the people of Walmart that I'm sure will be crowding the shoreline.

But this Jacob's Well place looks pretty cool, and it sounds like it's often overlooked and not crazy crowded.

I have been. It is a really cool place - the water is cold too, so be prepared for that. As for crowded...that is hit-or-miss. I would not think so right now. If you go, there will be a sign there that says no jumping. Don't jump. They will kick you out before you know what happened.

Hey man, I dealt with the same issue a few weeks ago trying to reserve camping 2 weeks out in a few state parks. Ended up going to my Ol' Faithful, Pace Bend on Lake Travis. It's a county park run by LCRA, no reservations needed for primitive camping, and there are camping spots everywhere. You don't have to go that primitive either, plenty of spots where you can park your truck just 10 ft from where you want to set up camp. Muleshoe Bend is another County Park I have had a great time at, not to far from Pace Bend either.

I have never been to Jacob's Well, but it's certainly on my list. Have heard it does get pretty crowded though.

Jacobs well is a cool place. Weekdays are the best time go. Locals kind of frown upon outsiders going there. As long as your respectfull of the place and don't leave any trash you should be okay. Unless you know where it is, you will have a hard time finding it and techically there is no where to park. My grandparents live in wimberly so I spent a lot of time in the well as a kid. Cold year round as its spring fed. Check out blue hole in wimberly too. More of a public place for kiddos to play. Several cools spots on the blanco to swim and play too. Can't go wrong with floating the Guadeloupe or comal either. Schliterbaun isn't to far from there too

I've seen a pick of this but never knew what it was called. Google said it was Texas most dangerous diving spot?

Never been, but wife and I were reading about it the other night. Apparently over 300 divers have lost their lives there. Thus was written on an underwater sign I saw when looking at pics. This will no doubt be scuba divers trying to navigate the cave and going too far and either getting lost or having some other catastrophic event. I'm sure someone here can chime in. But, from the tint of the water and the amount of light, it looked like the sign was fairly deep. At least too deep for non scuba equipped folks to get to. I'm sure we'll make a trip there at some point. looks like a great spot.

Thanks for the suggestions. Haven't ever been to Pace Bend. I've been to Muleshoe many times, both when the lake is up and when it's dry. Seen some characters out there, so I usually only go when I think it's gonna be a quiet wkend. Think Pace Bend will be doable, or are we more likely to get squeezed by one jackhole blasting pop country one one side and another blasting tejano on the other?

Do what i did when the wife left me alone with 2 boys on a holiday weekend.
                  1)Purchase a new truck
                  2)Purchase the kids 90cc 4 wheelers
                  3) Have so much fun the kids talk about all the time, the wife regrets having left us on a Holiday weekend.

The cave entrance is at the bottom and to the side and has a welded gate on it. The well it's self is in a creek bed and is about 15 feet wide and about 18' deep. There is a rock ledge that is about 8-10' high you can jump off of into the hole. Crystal clear water and all natural rock formation. It's a part of Edwards aquifer water source some how. They only allow certain people to scuba dive it anymore and it requires some certain certification. It's by permit only. The caverns traverse like over a mile under ground and are several miles long.

We went last weekend, cruised the E side of the park first looking for a decent camping spot away from people but where we could still fish at night. Got a tad nervous seeing so many people with spots already claimed at 3:00 on Friday afternoon. Ended up making our way to the W side of the park and ended up at a great spot in N Taylor Cove. The second day I drove out to Kate's cove, which is that little sliver of park that extends NE between the two private properties out to the end of the peninsula. Never had been to Kate's Cove and was surprised at all the fine camping spots they had there.

The E side of the park has a few cliffs, but the further down the peninsula you go, it turns into a gradual slope into the water. With the exception of N Taylor cove, the W side of the park is practically all cliffs of different sizes that are a blast to jump off of. You can find places that have a great/easy 10' jump into the water and easy climb out. My favorite place to jump is Thurman cove, which can be over 50' high when the lake is low. Closer to 20' jump now.

Been going to Pace Bend for several years and have always had a good time and found great spots that are more secluded from people but still within a stones throw of the water

2 miles from my house. It used to be cool when it was cree for the locals and no one no one knew about it. We would put a cooler of beer on the atv and go chill and dive from the focks. No it has gate and a ranger. Long waiting list, crowds. They limit the time you can spend, no beer, no jumping from the rocks.

I believe you have to have a reservation to go now. Maybe BOB can answer that. The blue hole is fun and no reservation needed.

Sheesh. Has it gotten that bad?

                            I am not sure.
