    Show pigs

We are thinking about starting to show pigs. Does anybody have any suggestions on what breed to get or any other advice?

Man there is alot of info on this lol. I showed Hamps in school and my son now shows hamps. I love the black and white belted pigs. Cross or blue butt is another great hog to show. These two are biggest two breeds at shows you will see. They sell more of hamps and cross bred pigs at all shows but there is alot more stiff competition in these breeds. My 3rd choice would be a Duroc but. They are very good hogs. They are a little harder to feed out then hamps or blue butts. Pm me if you have anymore questions on feed and so on. I will be glad to help

The key is finding a quality breeder and making sure they will have pigs in the age range you will need for the show you want to compete. PM me if you have other questions i'll be glad to help. My daughter has been showing for three years and we are fixing to get another one for a show in October.

Where you're showing will determine what type of hog you want be it hamps, duocks, blue butts, or some other. Contact your local extension agent. They should be able to help you tremendously.

            This.......

I assume that you are talking about a county show and not Houston or San Antonio.

All the counties vary as to how they are set up. Some are by breed, some are by weight only.
And there are a lot of breeders in Texas (most reputable, but some not).

A good list of breeders can be found at texaspork.org

BKLEM usually provides good insight on here as well.

disclaimer: my FIL raises hogs for a living and sells show pigs year-round, and my wife works for the 4-H program
