Back On The Flats Searching For Reds

I'm pumped, haven't been able to get out in about 3 weeks. Weather was perfect last Thursday but boat was getting worked on. I had to work Friday but my fishing partner and his Dad went out and found nice schools of hungry fish. Going to start at the same spot in the morning throwing the same shrimp tail with 1/4 oz jig head. Pressure is on because I'm supposed to fry fish for my hunting buddies Saturday. Send me some good karma. # fishonthursdays

spanked trout in Baffin last Sat but only picked up a few reds south of JFK bridge.

FYI_- Cotten's BBQ is doing $10 three meat plates for the month of May. You might want to check them out

                  Sorry Guys

I failed at the picture taking until I was already home. Had a good day but had to bust our butts. Fish just weren't on the flat and or we couldn't see them. When site fishing it takes sun and clear water. Well yesterday it stayed mostly cloudy and the wind had the water churned up. Found a big school first thing in the morning and got a double hook then it was grind time after that. I did end up with 3 reds and a nice trout for the fish fry this weekend.
Again, sorry about pictures, but I had operator issues with my phone. I did throw in an old one of the tower. Have a nice weekend.

Where is Cottten's now? Last time I was there, they had not rebuilt on the original location since the fire several years ago... Used to always stop there on my way to deep south Texas and then on the way back. Is it the same Cotten's or different?

He's talking about the one in Portland. There is also one in Calallen off hwy 624. They are not owned by the original Cotten but a grandson. The original location has never been rebuilt.

Awesome job either way. What would be the general idea when flats fishing? Im a wade fisherman and land based fisherman only not that I have a kayak I plan to venture out and what would you say the general idea or concept is when fishing flats. I know you said you spot fish but on cloudy days like you had what is your tactic? Just drift over a general area??? Any ideas helps. Thanks

On cloudy days we use a different color lenses in our Costas to help out. Without a boat or yak to get to the flats it would difficult, but yes, you have to set up drifts with the wind. If you know of some flats you can wade in to I would go very early while the water is still slick. Reading the surface of the water can be as important as looking thru the water to spot the fish. Reds will make a V pattern on the surface when they are swimming. Bait fish make a more erratic pattern on the surface. We spotted the big school yesterday from several hundred yards away while driving the boat and drifted to them. Just get out there and practice, Reds are on the flats year round.

OK. Thanks! Didn't know there was more than one. I'll try 'em out next time I'm in the area.

Oh yea, to the OP. Nice fish!! Ain't nothin' more exciting than a big ol' red on the end of a 8-9 wt fly rod in 18" of water! Haven't done it in years, but wading was my passion... sight fishing and chasing slicks, hence my screen name from MANY years ago... just never changed it...
