    good / close beach question

    What's up fellas,
wanting to take a few friends from out of town to a beach that's clean with some decent restaurants.
I'm guessing Galveston is out of the question so I was thinking Freeport?!!!?
Looking for a couple of good swimable clean beaches with decent wade fishing within 6 hours from Dallas...

I would normally go to CC or SPI but not wanting to drive that long and back for a weekend.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There isn't much in regards to restaurants and all that near freeport.
We used to camp out on Bryan Beach. Always a good time but its camping!

You could always rent a house on the west end of Galveston too.

The far west end of Galveston island is very different than the rest of the island. It's a very gentle slope into the water. I've let my young kids play in it. There are some very nice condos and houses down there. But it's a 40 minute drive into the town.

Red Snapper Inn in Surfside is a great beach restaurant. How clean the beach is depends on the current seaweed situation.

Pointe West in Galveston is nice. They rake the beach all the time and you just don't see the trash that gets left behind like on the other beaches. I think they have a restaurant there as well, but you won't have all the options like the east end of Galveston.

Thanks fellas! wasn't there a really nice beach in Freeport? I don't remember the name now, it's been several years.
If y'all had to choose, would you go with West side of Galveston (Pointe West) or Freeport? (beach and a place to stay and eat)

Freeport/Surfside only has a couple of restaurants and all of the beaches are drive-on beaches. The pedestrian beach used to be nice but it has washed away and is no longer.

Pointe West has a restaurant on-site that has really good food. There are a few other restaurants within a few miles and you can go into Galveston if you want to drive a ways. The beach in front of Pointe West is pedestrian only and the nicest beach in Galveston. You can drive onto the beach just west of Pointe West. My opinion is not impartial as I own a few condos at Pointe West and spend most of my spare time there.

Galveston is only 27 miles long from one end to the other so you can't be terribly far from anything Galveston has to offer.

Far west in end of Galveston is nice, less crowded & can fish the Pass on bay side. Sea Isle has good $$$ Seafood Place & a cool down stairs bar/restaurant $ on the water. Few other smaller places to eat in the area. Crystal Beach side has good surf fishing & fishing at Rollover Pass, very clean & nice thanks to the hurricane flushing everything away, haha!!!

sounds like Pointe West it is for a short drive, weekend trip.

Ken, you got a condo you want to rent for the memorial day weekend?

I own a house in Sea Isle and the West End of G-town is my preference. Send me a pm and I can give you some helpful hints.
                      Good luck

I agree, nicest beach on upper coast is West end of Galveston. Somewhat secluded. You can get up at dawn and wade fish the surf with no one around you. Afternoon, a lot of thing to do for family. They also have really fixed up East end beach. They have bands and food out there. Showers readily available. Its a lot more crowded, but good for people watching.

Freeport and surfside are fun if you want to get away from it all. Not a lot to do but relax and fish. I have a even more remote place in Louisiana to do that, so we usually hit Galveston for a fun weekend.

You might check out Sergeant beach. Its a great fishing community, remote and quiet. They have a nice fishing park on the intercostal, so you can crab and fish without wading. Kids love it. There are places to rent on the intercostal, Caney Creek, or the beach. I have fallen in love with the place and we have even discussed selling our place in Louisiana to buy a retirement place out there. There are a couple of restaurants, but not a lot in the area.
