How can one argue a warranty issue? Who do you argue with?

I have a 7 month old Honda Pioneer 700. They claim a mouse chewed a wire and fried the main electrical system. Over 1k to replace.

What's to stop them from just lying? I question them mainly because I called the shot before they called back. I guessed they would blame it on mice and instead of fixing a wire (or 2 or 3 or whatever) they would try to replace the whole thing.

I figure it's there fault for three reasons.
1. Where is the fuse to prevent something like this?
2. Seriously.a mouse can cause 1k in damage?
3. Surprise, surprise. Heavy demand for this part means none in stock and on undetermined back order. Gee does that tell you something?

What steps would you take?

I would take the steps necessary to keep mice from chewing the wires again.

And you would just believe the repair shop that it was mice and hand them a grand with a smile?

Interesting. Did you ask to look at the damage? Will probably be multiple places it's damaged if mice got to it. They do a lot of damage in a very short time.

Seems like you were aware of a potential mouse issue. IM not sure its viable to expect Honda to rodent proof it either. Even my trusty fourtrax 300 isn't mouse proof....

hmmm, I first would make them show me proof of what they are claiming, IF it is true then yes, as ticked off as I would be I would go ahead and pay the money to have it fixed OR depending on the location and severity I would fix it myself. Now on the other hand, if what they claimed and then showed me or failed to show me was questionable I believe I would more than likely get a lawyer involved.

I was only aware that it was an electrical issue. So I guessed they would claim the worse case. Isn't that what they usually do?

I still fail to see how mice can cause that much damage. One would think a fuse would stop any major damage.

If you don't believe them take it to another dealer and see if you get the same results.

You said in your original post you guessed they would blame mice. There has to be more to the story, what made you think they would say that? If it is just a wire or 2 or 3 like you say then you should be able to splice those pretty quick yourself and be on your way.

Mice and rats inflict millions of $ in damages to vehicles annually exactly as you describe. Dealers see it constantly, unfortunately. They love to chew the wires. Period. And love the under hood, under seat, or on top of gas tanks (sending units in my case) areas to build nests, store corn, and chew copper conductors.

They've wrecked a 87 Ford F-150 pickup, did over 1K$ in damage to my 2002 Tahoe, and damaged my Polaris Ranger to point it cost over $400 AFTER taking measures to minimize their impact.

Ask any car or UTV mechanic - your dealer is likely being totally honest with you!

My place is in the sticks and I store corn and protein year round so it's tough to control. I leave hoods open, remove seats, use poison, and now have four cats.

I hate to hear that. For peace of mind maybe you can request them give you the old wiring harness back?

I've had mice get into the main wiring harness and chew up a bunch of wires. It took me several hours to re-splice all of them and get the machine running again.
I came back the next week and had the pleasure of doing it all over again.

Mice can make one heck of a mess.

I re-wired an entire bass boat due to mice. The boat sat in my uncles barn for less than 2 weeks.

And, unless something has changed since I worked for a Honda Powersports dealer, Honda Corp Pays the claim. Our techs loved warranty and accident work. As far as it being backordered I would think it is just that but for the opposite reason. Probably not a lot of people buying complete wiring harness for a pioneer so the demand and thus production numbers are low.

Just got my Polaris Ranger back a couple weeks ago for the same thing. Didn't cost $400, but close to $250. Rat's nest in the air intake and a chewed wiring harness. And I know they were telling the truth, because I saw the rat when he ran out of the Ranger and my JRT killed him. Now, what was that ****ed cat doing ?
