I bought my ATV brand new and I don't believe I have a title. I think I got a Origin of Purchase and a bill of sale but that's it.

If it's old, yeah I would, a few yrs old ID ask for drivers license minimal and have the vin ran. I have one that was bought new that I don't have the title for. Lost over the yrs ID offer to file for lost title if the new guy wanted it ifbhe paid for it but mines worth less than a grand now so I'm not sinking anu5hing into it if I ever get rid of it.

Some states don't issue titles on atv's.

Mine was stolen and I bought it new with a title. The only way you will not get one without a title, as far as I know in Texas, is if you pay cash for it. If you finance it, you will more than likely get a title. The one I just bought has a title and the people that I bought it from and sell only ALL used ATV's and UTV's will not buy one from anywhere without a title.

I think you can get the number off the bike and have tpwd or dps run them. If that bike was stolen the numbers will be in the system as stolen.

There were a few years the state wouldn't issue tittles for atv's. Then they became optional.

Bought one last year without a title, no issue. As mentioned above, it's an oldie but a goodie. And I knew the seller.

They still do this as far as I know on I-10 west during the beginning of deer season. I've heard large numbers of ATV's, UTV's and trailers being confiscated because they are stolen. I know a couple of years ago they were set up at the weigh station just east of Sealy.

If you would buy a gun without going through a FFL, you shouldn't have any hesitation on buying an ATV without a title.

I've personally bought 3 and never received a title. It has to do with the way they're bought and what finance companies are used.

I fail to understand your analogy. Are you implying that buying a gun via an FFL somehow assures that the gun isn't stolen?

Is the sole purpose of having a title to ensure there isn't some sort of lien against the wheeler? They aren't registered or licensed.

If I was buying to resale, then maybe not... If I was buying for my personal use, I would run the numbers, get all the sellers info and no worry about it again...

That's kinda my point......in the same manner, just because there is no title doesn't mean it's stolen
