If you really want to find out what's in your tank, get an ichthyologist to come out and shock the pond. You will learn a lot.

        How to catch the biggun'?

I would use a frog. Just caught a 6lb 11oz bass using it this past weekend and the shoreline was full of moss/pond weeds. I was also using a float tube which I highly recommend if it's a 4+ acre pond.
        Good luck!

On a small body of water, you have to pull out a bunch of those 12-14" fish for them to get big. My buddy had a pond like that. 3-4 years ago, we started keeping every 12-15" bass we caught. Now he has some bigguns.
I agree, only thing is, there is not one fish that is extremely healthy. Seriosuly, the 14" look like footballs. I don't think that is the sole problem but I do think it would help. I have another buddy that we did the same thing and took all the fish out under 14" and now the fish are all healthy and have gotten into some in the 6 lbs range now.

I would be fishing early with a frog, my preference is a ribbit. Also the bigger the frog the bigger the bite however you may not catch as many. Also I would try a weightless 6-8" swimbait and kind of run it along the top of the water and punch it through the grass. Focus on areas where you have a flat next to a steep drop off into deeper water, the bass will use the deeper water to travel and will come up on that shallow flat to feed.

Later in the day I would back off and start fishing deep, deep water crankbaits if possible or carolina rigged worms..

Had a buddy catch a 7+ on a ribbit two weeks ago in about 1 and a half foot of water close to sunset..

Tie on a Baby 1 minus and see what happens. It runs real shallow and is great fished over grass. I have caught lots of nice bass on them.
