What kind of knives? There are several kinds. If it was me, and it ain't, I'd do as the previous poster suggested. Go to Youtube, enter knife kits and go through the results. Start with a simple kit for the type of knife you want to make and work up from there. You can get kits that only require assembly, which to be honest, many of the "custom" knives are, on up to just basic materials that require a full range of work. I haven't done any in a number of years so don't really have any suggestions as to suppliers. Full on knife making is a highly technical endeavour and requires a lot of equipment but there are a lot of stages between which is why I suggest start with a kit and work your way up.

I am not a guru, but thought it would be fun to make a knife. Well I still have not "made a knife", but I assembled a couple. I was lucky to find a guy that was willing to show me how he did his and act as a mentor. I bought a kit and he showed me from there. I think he had the stuff to start from scratch, but I was far from wanting to start from that point. I learned and have assembled 2. I would like to find someone else(now that I moved away from the first "mentor") that would be willing to show me a little more or at least different technique.

I watched Gough Custom, Making a custom knife for an Infantryman, on youtube...that was literally all I watched before I made my 1st one. I made a copy of his profiling jig and got started! Since then I've tried to talk w other makers, visit shops, and do a BUNCH of online reading/watching youtube!

I did a whole butt ton of googling, book reading, and youtube watching before making my first knife, and since making knives, so lemme tell you what I found most helpful.
1. The Complete Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas
2. Steel Metallurgy for the Non-Metalurgist by John D. Verhoeven
You can get a free PDF here: http://www.hybridburners.com/documents/verhoeven.pdf
3. Walter Sorrel's Youtube Page:
And then there's always my little build along. I'd do some things different if i were to do another build along, but there's still some useful information in there:
