    Satellite phone questions

I am interested in one to use for when offshore and also when fishing down on PINS. It would more of an emergency use type thing rather than daily communication.
Anyone have any experience or suggestions on these? I have no experience with a Sat phone.

I use one at work from time to time. It works just about everywhere. I have been in some deep canyons on the rio grande where no signal was available... Not sure what kind of money the phones or service run. I beleive ours are Motorola brand phones. I will verify tomorrow.

There were some in a marine shop I was looking at to buy out right and pay for a service package monthly. I dont what brand is better than another etc. I have talked to several pushers on rigs using them but thats about the extent of my experience with them

From my limited experience I would get an Iridium phone. I always rent one when hunting in CO, has always worked. Globalstar had a problem with satellites some time back, maybe they are better now, I don't know. I rent from GIT Satellite Communications (gitsat.com) in Austin...may call them, I think they have service plans, etc.

I was about to start a similar thread until I stumbled on this one.

Rental for an Iridium is $94/week with SMS capabilities.
Calls are $1.75/minute and texts are $0.45/minute.

So, for two weeks in Africa, I will probably spend $550 on the rental and 200 minutes (if even needed).

The Iridium GO! is a hotspot that can be purchased for $850. A 400 minute plan can be bought for $489 and last 6 months.

I have an Argentina trip coming up in October, so trying to figure out the best route. Anyone have any experience with the Iridium GO!? I'm going to need my phone, regardless, since I don't know anyone's numbers from memory and would always use it if service was available. Thoughts?

There's satellite "texting" lot cheaper than the phone

Hand held VHF? Lot cheaper and gets emergency help if needed for PINS
