Took my stuff to my tax guy after work today and guess what. Married filing separate does require to add everything together and split in half. Quickly ran down the numbers and he said I should get a hefty sum back. We'll see if it's the 5 figures I came up with or something smaller.
For those saying to put your income and withholding and your spouses income and withholding in separate when filing "married filing separate", you might want to read IRS Publication 555. Texas IS a community property state and you split everything in half. Now there can be some SP (separate property) and some CP (community property), but mostly as far as most income and most property is concerned it's 50/50... And be careful with prenups and postnups.
I've studied tax code more this week than I ever have before. This **** is interesting.
