Does anyone know of a good Inshore guide in Destin Fla.?
We are taking the kids to Disney in June and on the way back are spending 3 days in Destin so I am looking for a good I shore guide for myself and 2 other dad's for a full day trip does anyone have any recommendations?
Be careful in Destin when trying to find a good guide. They are very expensive and spend a ton of time running from spot to spot and catch very few fish. Go to Bass Pro Shop and ask the guys in the fishing department they put me in touch with a guy that was really good and a lot cheaper.
Offshore Fishing Charters and Destin Bay Fishing Charters. We catch Red Snapper, Cobia, King Mackerel, Redfish, Sea trout, Mahi-Mahi, Amberjack and much more
went with Matt last year we were hooked up with Mahi until our arms about fell off...got tired so went after grouper and although I didn't get one to the boat I got busted off 4 times and nearly pulled out of the boat...
he docks at a nice place when u get back in he cleans the catch while u grub at the restaurant and drink a cold one
the kids would love the bait catching with sabiki rigs...we caught all our bait on light tackle before heading offshore a few miles
Our family has a condo there and we've been going for 20 years. I gave up on late summer off-shore and in-shore charters years ago because they usually spent their time bouncing around trying to find a few fish of whatever species they could find. Occasionally we had a good day, but not typically. We tried a bunch of guides that were recommended by the locals but I can't even remember which captains at this point.
Here's what we do now for fishing fun. No table fare, but we can often wear ourselves out...
Go about 2/3 of the way out on the east jetty about an hour before sunset. It's a hike, but not bad. Throw a shiny gold gotcha plug with an orange head. The gafftopsail catfish will come up off the bottom and annihilate those things. They are very strong and fight like crazy. You'd never think it was a catfish on the end of your line. They are the slimiest catfish of all and their fins pack a stinging punch like no other, so just be ready for that. It's REALLY bad if they get ya. Way worse than a regular catfish fin.
At dusk go out about waist deep off the beach. The blue fish and skipkjacks are often in there real thick when the water is a little churned up. This also works well in clear water when you can throw to a bait ball, but the fish aren't usually as thick as when water is churned. Throw a 3 or 4 inch white swim bait and hang on. They're not big fish, but are a ton of fun for their size. You need a leader or the skipjacks will cut it every time. Just heavier mono will do.
There is some decent bass fishing in the ponds at topsail state park and in the ponds behind the Destin Commons mall. Not big numbers of bass, but good sizes. My son caught a 7 pounder behind Destin Commons. We caught almost all of them on a green pumpkin senko, wacky rigged.
