Kayaking bait off Galveston. How far?

Anyone kayak bait out. I was wondering how deep the water is on average and how far you go out. I am thinking you get out of the surf around 120 to 160 yards. Is the 200 or 300 yard range good. I have seen places talk about 300 to 500 yards. I can't imagine reeling in a big fish from 500 yards. I think we're I am looking to start fishing in where the water gets 20 feet deep and then space out the lines.... What to I wanna catch? Heck a little bit of everything sharks, reds, a jack...

I have better luck fishing out of the kayak itself. You have to get way out there to hit 20' of water around Galveston. And swimmers make long lines a pain unless you are in a rugged area of the beach.

20' deep off Galveston is gonna be out there quite a ways. I was out what felt like a mile (probably only 300 yards) and was in 11' of water off of Bolivar

Yea I know you can walk forever out there. It will be interesting to take the kayak out and see what I can find

You can catch sharks, reds, and jacks just wading out to the second or third bar and casting. You can yack a bait out a ways further if you want but it's not necessary. I wouldn't take one out 300 or more yards to fish off of the beach unless you're after big sharks, like 8 feet plus big.

I'm told Galveston drops a foot per mile past the 3rd sand bar..

20 foot in Galveston for like a mile I typically just anchor up and fish for black tips the. Enjoy the ride

Man that would be pretty sweet, but I would be a little nervous on a 10' kayak, Pelican Viper, a mile out. I have been practicing with my kayak in the pool flipping it and getting back in. I am planning on running bait, cut bait and crab, out from shore and fishing on shore. Then it qualifies as quality time with the wife. I really need to get a tandem kayak. I know it's a little early yet but I am ready for summer...

In all honesty be extremely careful out there and try to have another kayaker with you currents aren't no joke you turtle up out there there's a good possibility you can get swept under or away spend the extra money on a good life vest and preferably not a inflatable one I wear a nrs chinook it's comfortable and serves a its purpose also try to get you a vhf radio I leave mine on my jacket so I can keep in contact with shore or other kayakers i also use it for weather reports and coast guard just incase you get swept out it may cost more but it's worth your life if you join Tkf there are a lot of great guys on there that may invite you on a trip or two and keep an eye on you till you get the hang of it any other questions feel free to pm me

Yea PFD for sure! I found this pretty cool site where you can get all the depth maps at. It look like 20 feet of water is ~1100 yards out. pretty cool stuff... I think I am going to play it pretty conservative this weekend maybe 200 or 300 yards and pratice turtle'n in the pool this week..

Only reason I kayak out that far is if thats where a major color change is. Otherwise you can catch the mentioned fish in and around the 2nd and 3rd sand bar.

Like he was saying^ and if your looking for water change head down to Freeport you can paddle to the first rig fairly easy and the kings and smacks get in there pretty thick just troll with a duster rig and boom your good to go and if it helps I practiced turtleing at lake woodlands it's only 8 ft all the way but still deep enough for you to not touch bottom and will keep you from cheating by touching bottom another little tip don't put your rods in up right rod holders in the breakers if you roll you will snap them all also if you don't want anything lost tie it down and I mean everything is rolled twice riding the surf in and lost a nice knife ... But I got the fish back alright lol

So This will be my second time going to Freeport fishing and well my second time fishing in the ocean. Last time I fished, during spring break, between the 2nd and 3rd sand bar and caught hardheads and about a 14" Bonethead... I am looking for more action then that. I have been trying to do my homework with reading the surf, bars, points and holes. When I look at the area I was fishing this is what I see... did I mark the three bars correctly? I know I am asking a lot of questions I will probably owe someone a beer when it's all said and done.
