More proof on how tough pigs are

Some back story, a few buddies and I went and had a guys weekend opening weekend of dove season this year at my friends ranch down near Buffalo. He had hogs coming in like clock work to the same feeder so we took or one friend that has never shot an animal before to get him his first pig. 2 of us went and Dove hunted, the other 2 went after hogs. About 30 minutes in, we heard a shot and met back at the house, expecting to see them quartering it out.

No luck, he was shooting one of our ARs that we knew was zeroed and told him to shoot right in the ear. They watched it drop and roll around then lay there. As they were climbing down the stand it got up and walked away. They spent another hour looking for a blood trail with no luck. He was pretty disappointed but happy it was just a pig and not a deer.

Well I wake up to a group text with this picture.... We're headed back out there soon haha

Just another reason why 6.8spc is getting my vote over 5.56/223 on my AR build

          Tough ole fart!

On a serious note, I don't think I would have had a guy that has never shot an animal, aim for the ear canal. That can be a tough shot for seasoned guy. Put it in his shoulder and friend would have had some pork chops!

Meh, not my call, it was my buddy's ranch so he made the call. We all shoot together pretty often but yeah its a tough shot if never done before.

He's excited to get back out there

I've seen them eat poison bombs left out for coyotes, and it never even phased em. They'll eat the most rotten putrid stuff and never get sick. They must have an awesome immune system.

The fact that they are that tough is even more reason to take a higher percentage shot, certainly the size of the round is not to blame. Hate to see an animal walking around like that, even if it is just a hog.

Crazy. Hit him with a 45-70 that should do the trick.

Not blaming the round at all, I grew up ear holing hogs with a .17hmr

But I have personally witnessed a handful of hogs get up from shots from a 223 when they were less than great shot placement. On the same hunts, not a single hog got up for a follow up shot with a 6.8spc, even with less than stellar shot placement.

Little guns are for good shots, not beginners.

But, a bad shot is a bad shot. Fellow on our lease shot one's lower jaw off with a .280 Rem---and never found it. It was about an 80-lb young boar and was tri-colored. About 2 weeks later I was in the blind and saw this apparition walking towards me about 150 yds out. Put the binocs on it and all I could see was that it was a pig and it looked like a head with two legs under it--couldn't see anything else. It was skinny, to say the least.

I let it get up to my hand corn, about 25 yds out and could easily tell it was that pig, as the jawbone was hanging down and every time it would put its head down to get some corn it would squeal--it was awful. So, when it turned broadside, I put a 7-Mag round through the boiler room, and the dang pig ran! Well, that was disturbing to me--it was already in enough pain and I didn't want to be responsible for more. Got down and walked to where it was standing and there was blood and lung tissue on the ground beyond, and the pig was laying about 5 yds off the sendero, dead. It was all I could do to keep from puking from the smell and the maggots crawling around the jaw wound. Got a rope on a leg and dragged it away from the blind about 300 yds downwind. Checked it a week later and it was still there--hide hadn't been torn open--but the "meat" was being consumed by the biggest mass of maggots I've ever seen.

                              Missed it by that much.

That said my 13 year old went 5 for 5 with a 32 grain .204 at 167 paces. A total of 7 pigs have died from that rifle and none have needed tracking. Coyotes.....fagetaboutit!
