if its diesel check your glow plugs. Had the same thing happen to me. Would crank and crank just bellowing black smoke. I pulled the glow plugs and tested them. Just ground the body of the glow plug and apply 12v to the center stud. Should light up glowing red, only takes a second. A bad one will not heat up.
I have a '79 Kubota and during the winter time the kill switch/knob I pull on to kill the engine at times the spring sticks in the kill position. Yes I know it sounds stupid but I had your same issues a few years ago and it was grounded in the kill mode. Yes I felt like a dumb---.
Mine also has a self primer pump you can manipulate manually to alleviate the air in lines issue for troubleshooting.
Went ahead and changed both air filters (inner and outer) and fuel filter. When changing the fuel filter, even though the fuel was no more than 3 months old - max - it didn't even smell like diesel. Drained fuel tank, swapped filters and refilled.
Fuel filter had to have been the culprit all along.
She is back to purring like a kitten.
THANKS TO ALL WHOM HAD A SUGGESTION. I DO APPREICATE IT.
