    electrical question

Looking at replacing my cooktop in my kitchen. I currently have a 30 amp breaker , but I haven't looked if the cable is 8 awg or 10 awg. The cooktop model my wife has decided on calls for a 40 amp breaker.

In looking at 8/3 romex, it does show that the max amp is 40 amps. The length of run will be pretty short, I would say 15 ft. or less. So my question is do I need to run 6 awg to be on the safe side or should 8 gauge be ok.

Most likely your 30 amp circuit is # 10 Before you change the wire out
check the new cooktop to see if it requires 3 wire or 4 wire
if it requires 4 wire you need 8-3-w ground

Yes, just checked and old wire is #10, so I will be pulling wire. I haven't ordered it yet, but found in the instructions for wiring to existing 3 wire and to existing 4 wire. But since changing wire, I guess best bet is to go ahead with 8-3-ground. Thanks for the info.
