    Foam insulation in a shop

I'm building a 30x40 shop with small living quarters. We're planning on living in it until we build our house, probably six months or so. My question is how thick of foam insulation is normal for this size of shop/living quarters? Thanks.

I'm not sure on how thick. But I've been told not to do it right after the shops been built. The oil in the sheet metal won't let it stick. Something to ask your insulation guy about

Two inches for closed cell and 4 for open cell is what I have been told, if your living quarters are built inside an insulated building I would think it would be less.

In my neighborhood, just about every house has a metal shop, insulation is about 3/16" thick. Of course all done by the same guy, but it seems to do a good job for a shop. Might want more if living in it but its fine for a shop.

2" of closed cell. That stuff is amazing. We added on to a shed and sprayed the new add on. The other half wasn't spray foamed and it snowed a few weeks after we built on to it. When the sun came out it was obvious which side was spray foamed and which wasn't. There was a perfect line of snow on the roof between the add on and the shed that was already there. One side was completely melted and the other wasn't.

I was quoted $3/sft for foaming my 40x60x16 shop. In the end I just did the conventional, vinyl faced 2" fiberglass for less than half the money, but we did foam the new house we're building.
