the thing about motorcycles is everyones style and preference is different. determine how you want to use the bike and what features you want.

commuting, putting around town ect small bikes are fine. long trips, prolongs why use ect you will want more comfort and wind deflection.

also, watch a video on youtube called "twist of the wrist 2"

Im 5'9 - 155lbs. I just sold my sportster 883C with forward controls. It was a perfect fit for me. It had 22K when I sold it and ran like a top. My brother has a 06 sportster with 36K on it and it runs just fine. No problems at all.

As long as the previous owner took care of it and preformed proper maintenance I would not have a problem buying a bike with 30-50K on it for the right price.

Mine was an 04 rubber mount EVO. I loved it. I believe they went fuel injection in 06. I liked the carb version myself.

Whatever you buy. Make sure it is 04 and up.

A sporty is a good choice for a beginner. Especially one who is smaller built. Maneuverable in town. Easy to work on and an inexpensive way to get into our two wheeled world.

Ride it. Learn on it. Enjoy it. When you're ready, move up. Who knows, you might not even enjoy it and decide that it's just not for you. If so then you don't have much invested.

I've been riding for 48 years and can't imagine life without two wheels, for some it's a passion. Love my Heritage Classic.

Good luck in your endeavors and keep the dirty side down.

PS, Sailor had a sporty for sale a while back, might PM him and see if he's still looking to sell it.

the sportster is not a womans bike its a builders bike. google boardtracker or bobber sportster. A bone stock sportster does look to be lacking but a little creativity and you can make it look like anything you want. for the plus size guys though I think you will be a little cramped

All Harleys are chick magnets. I can't count the times over the years I have had girls come up to me ask for a ride. The last one that did that has been here with me for the last 12 years. I am not allowed to ride somewhere alone anymore.

BTW, the baddest NHRA Pro Stock motorcycles are using the sportster engine platform to build their motors. Although they call them Buells, the Buell engine was a sportster engine with different heads, cams, fuel supply. Vance & Hines Pro Stock Harley is no longer a V-rod motor with the latest rule changes. They use a Sportster crankcase platform as well.

Here is a little street legal daily rider Sportster that you can go pick on crotch rockets with.
Yes it does have a bit of work done to it but it is a naturally aspirated engine.
Punched out to 90 ci and some fancy head work/cams.

Welcome to the world of HD! I started on a Sporty, then ultra, then road glide, then road king, another road king, another road king.....guess what my favorite bike was/is?

Get you a HD "Wings Tat," then you will never have to worry about switching brands, lol!

Y'all are killin me. As I get older I look at things I should've done and owning/riding a motorcycle is one of them. May just have to do it.

Yah know buddy....I always used to say..."you have never seen the sky so blue until you look up from your HD." Just saying....none of us are getting younger...take the plunge BUT, take the "baffles" out, make it LOUD....LOUD saves lives +, it Ain't a Harley unless it's loud in my book.

This is the driving force. Not old by any means but this has been on the list my whole life. I appreciate all the thoughts and insight. I expected the back and forth on the sportster, and the thoughts are valid. For me it's cheaper, a little lighter/smaller to learn on and I think it will fit me well. Plus, they turn into a sharp looking bobber pretty easy. I don't plan on riding 30k miles a year not hours at a time, at least for now.

Guys, there's another thread on TBH about a TBH'r needing help and prayers after a home accident. Post 160 talks about a benefit being held at the Harley Dealer in Garland, I saw more information elsewhere but don't find it right now.

I hope you guys locally can support this, I'm waiting for my t-shirt now to make a contribution to his family.
