    Merc outboard shift problem

To make a short story long, I have a 1985 8hp Merc. The black model with red/white stripes on the cowl. Had a spark plug coil strip and after a 6mos at the mechanic I fixed it myself. But here is what it's doing:

Starting up on 3rd pull or so, may or may not idle and if I'm having trouble, I can start it, shift real quick into reverse and the engine will run but it will get away from me until I go back into neutral and then it will idle nicely until it just putters out. If I keep the tiller at a 45 degree angle in forward it pops along but still runs. If I lay tiller down to normal position, it will rev up and then fall, rev up, then fall, etc. any ideas? I'm wondering if it's a shift linkage problem?

Definitely sounds like a shift linkage problem. Try and recalibrate it, or sometimes a lot of times the metal cable will break inside the sleeve and make it act goofy.

Has anyone ever messed with cable on Merc outboards of my year model?
